Denial of Service (DoS)

Summary
Denial of Service (DoS) is a type of cyber attack aimed at making an application, service, or network resource unavailable to legitimate users by overwhelming it with excessive traffic or exploiting vulnerabilities.
Key Characteristics
- Targets availability by disrupting normal service operations
- Can involve flooding the target with excessive requests or exploiting software vulnerabilities
- Often uses a single source in DoS or multiple sources in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)
- May cause service downtime, degraded performance, or complete outage
- Can be launched against web servers, networks, or applications
Defensive Controls
- Implement rate limiting and traffic filtering to block suspicious traffic
- Deploy firewalls and intrusion prevention systems (IPS) with DoS protection features
- Use content delivery networks (CDNs) and load balancers to absorb and distribute traffic
- Maintain up-to-date software and patch known vulnerabilities
- Establish incident response plans and monitor network traffic for anomalies
Related Security Solutions
DoS attacks are mitigated through solutions such as Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection services, network firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS), and cloud-based traffic scrubbing services.
